Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the eng Hour phonics instructional program on Thai grade one students’ English literacy. The setting of the study was Anuban Khunhan (Si) School, a primary school in Khunhan District, Sisaket Province. The participants of this study were 94 EFL grade one students who were, on everage, 7 years old. There were 53 girls and 41 boys. The study was carried out for 12 weeks throughout the second semester of the 2016 academic year.
The research instruments used in this study were: (1) 40 phonics instructional videos from eng Hour phonics instructional program which teach the main 42 sounds of English, (2) six identical pre-tests and post-tests measuring letter recognition, letter formation, sound recognition, sound identification, sound segmentation and sound blending, and (3) observation form of students’ learning behavior. The data collected from the pre-tests and the post-tests were compared and analyzed, employing means, percentages and paired t-tests. The findings showed that the eng Hour phonics instructional program had significant positive effects on Thai grade one students’ English literacy in all the six areas tested for literacy development. Students scored the highest at posttest on sound recognition while the blending posttest scores demonstrated the lowest across all instruments employed.
