เรื่อง เจ้าอาวาสกับเณรน้อย (The abbot and the little novice monk)

Once upon a time there lived an abbot and a little novice monk in a temple in Isan. Every day they exchanged a story to keep each other company. One day, a monk from another temple in the village nearby came to visit the abbot. The little novice monk saw the monk approaching and suddenly thought about a prank. Therefore, he ran off to greet the monk and whispered in his ear, “Brother, you need to speak to the abbot as loudly as you can because he’s deaf.”

Upon hearing that, the monk thought that this visit would proceeds in a poor manner because they needed to talk loudly which was inappropriate for monks. But realizing this was necessary for the sake of communication, he them said, “Really? OK then.” thinking this visit would be a tiring one.

As soon as the little novice monk took the visitor’s bags, he rushed to the abbot’s hut. “Father, we have got a visitor.” he said. The abbot was delighted to hear that. The little novice monk continued. “But the problem is he is deaf. You need to speak loudly with him.” The abbot agreed. The little monk then stepped out and watched them quietly from afar.

One the visiting monk arrived at the hut, he yelled, “Hello,Father..How are you doing?” The loud greeting made the abbot think that the visiting monk was indeed deaf as the little novice monk had said. Being afraid that the visitor would not hear him well, he then yelled back, “I’m good.”

They continued to shout at each other during their conversation…to the little novice monk’s delight and excitement without any fear of a punishment for pulling their legs.

As the abbot got exhausted from yelling, he then lowered his voice and mumbled to himself, “This is freaky. I’ve never seen anybody this deaf before in my entire life!” As soon as the visiting monk heard that, he fired back saying, “Oh darn it! How could you have made such a statement?” The abbot then said, “What? Are you not deaf?” “No, sir,” the visiting monk replied. At that very moment, the abbot realized that had been fooled by the little novice monk, so he thought to himself, “Wait until it’s my turn, little novice monk!”

This folktale taught us that:

No one should enjoy fooling other people.
